Punachicks Farm is happy to announce that we will be raising organic pastured broiler chickens for the Big Island community. We are trying to fulfill a need that we saw for more local, wholesome alternatives to factory farmed supermarket chicken. Our first batches of whole dressed broilers will be available for pick up at our farm in Keaau on August 24 & August 31. We plan on having them available on a consistent basis (twice a month) after that. Our chickens are raised in small groups in portable pens that are moved daily to fresh pasture, so that they can enjoy green grass, bugs, fresh air, and sunshine. We believe this is a much better model than that used on confinement "factory farms", including "big organic" brands available in the supermarket. We raise and slaughter our chickens respectfully, which produces a very high quality product. One taste and you'll be hooked! Aloha!

Last Friday (June 21) the sun coursed above our heads for longer than on any of the previous 364 days. A cycle ended – and a new one began. Then on Sunday, as the sun dropped as a red mass into the Kona sea, a full orange moon emerged from the wind-swept Puna sea on the opposite side of the island, lighting the night.

A new CTAHR publication, long overdue, features a comprehensive introduction to growing and using lemons in Hawai'i. It presents a brief history, covers some of the popular varieties that are grown here, plus nutritional values, propogation methods, cultivation, pests, diseases, harvesting and marketing information. See it at http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/oc/freepubs/pdf/F_N-25.pdf.

I'm looking for home gardeners in the Hilo area who would be willing to be interviewed for a book that I'm working on about home food production. I'm interested in all sized gardens and the range of food production from just a few trees/plants to those more dedicated farmers. The purpose is to complement the survey material I have on home food production. The interviews would be at people's gardens/homes and would take no more than an hour. If interested, please contact:  Kathryn Besio, Associate Professor and Chair, Geography and Environmental Studies, University of Hawai'i at Hilo.
