About Farmers Market Prices

An Open Letter to the Farmers Market Community

At farmers markets all over the state I see pricing structures on locally grown fruit and veggies that just don't compute.

In order to be sustainable, prices must be set above the cost of production.
In order to be sustainable, prices must be set above the cost of production.

When I started a small farmers market adjacent to the Kona Pacific Farmers Cooperative on Napoopoo Road in the mid-1990s, avocados were $1.00 each and bananas were 5 for $1.00, as that was roughly what the prices were in grocery stores. Back then my Kaiser insurance was $680/month and gas $2.23/gal or so. My insurance is now $1300/month and you know what gas has gone up to. I'm sure you all have stories like this.

Prices at grocers for avocados have gone from $1.99 to $3.99 at KTA for imported avocados, and at some stores from $0.69-$2.45/lb for local avocados. Why haven’t farmers market prices gone up too?

Farmers Markets

There are approximately 25 farmers markets on Hawai'i Island. The number of vendors at each of these markets ranges from 5 to 200. Some serve neighborhoods, others serve whole districts—each is unique. The variety of fresh produce and food products is dazzling. Many food crops and products are grown conventionally, but more vendors are offering certified organic produce and products grown without petroleum-based chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Many markets have plants and flowers. Some markets add arts, crafts, clothing and miscellaneous household items, new and used. One could say that farmers markets are the heart of our island’s local, sustainable food system.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of "shares" to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a "membership" or a "subscription") and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.

Consumer benefits:

  • Eat ultra-fresh food, with all the flavor and vitamin benefits
  • Get exposed to new vegetables and new ways of cooking
  • Usually have an opportunity to visit the farm at least once a season
  • Develop a relationship with the farmer who grows your food and learn more about how food is grown

Farmer benefits:

  • Can spend time marketing when the demands of farming are low (off-peak season)
  • Build a reliable, steady customer base
  • Receive payment early in the season, which helps with the farm's cash flow
  • Have an opportunity to get to know the people who eat the food they grow

CSA: Punachicks Farm
Raising organic pastured broiler chickens for the Big Island community. We are trying to fulfill a need that we saw for more local, wholesome alternatives to factory farmed supermarket chicken. We plan on having them available on a consistent basis (twice a month). Our chickens are raised in small groups in portable pens that are moved daily to fresh pasture, so that they can enjoy green grass, bugs, fresh air, and sunshine. We believe this is a much better model than that used on confinement "factory farms", including "big organic" brands available in the supermarket. We raise and slaughter our chickens respectfully, which produces a very high-quality product. One taste and you'll be hooked! Nancy Ginter-Miller at Keauhou Farmers Market.Nancy Ginter-Miller at Keauhou Farmers Market. The Kona County Farm Bureau created the Keauhou Farmers Market in 2006 to provide a venue for farmers to be able to sell their produce direct to consumers. All vendors are required to be farmers selling primarily their own products, although they may also resell goods from other local farmers, but not from imported sources or wholesalers. Vendors are also encouraged to sell their own value-added products such as jams and jellies, flavored macadamia nuts, 100% Kona coffee, chocolate, etc., as long as the main ingredients are grown and produced locally.

Kino'ole Farmers Market

Kino'ole Market, Hilo
Kino'ole Market, Hilo

The Kino’ole Farmers Market in southern Hilo has a big advantage over other similar markets on the windward side of Hawai’i Island. It is situated in the parking lot of the State Employment Office off Kino'ole St. with ample parking space all around, and plenty of space for shoppers to stroll between the booths without feeling crowded. This is a big consideration when you live on the rainy side of the island and umbrellas are a necessary accessory!

At the Kino’ole market you can buy a wide variety of farm-fresh produce, baked goods, and horticulture products. There is a colorful selection of fresh vegetables and fruits; hot homemade soups; fresh baked breads and pastries; locally made taro chips and cookies; veggie and herb starts; and flowers and plants. A center tent is always set up for well attended weekly presentations of Chi Gong, a Chinese exercise meditation that is similar to Tai Chi. The tent is also used from time to time for workshops, lectures and cooking demonstrations.

Our recent visit to the huge Maku’u Farmers Market took place on a breezy but gloriously sunny Sunday morning.  The market place was buzzing and the parking was ‘competitive’ with new arrivals waiting patiently for early birds to leave an empty spot…but the waiting didn’t take long as there was a steady stream of in-and-out, well-directed traffic.

SPACE serves as a hub for many creative endeavors and also has been hosting the farmers market for the last three years. Since then, this colorful market has been attracting between 30 to 50 vendors, depending on the time of year and over 300 patrons every Saturday morning. The SPACE farmers market is located off Highway 137 (Red Road) in lower Puna at the Seaview Performing Art Center for Education, from which it takes the name as an acronym. Once you turn into the Seaview subdivision, the signs are not very obvious and I had to ask someone how to find it.

If you happen to be in Na'alehu on a Wednesday or Saturday morning, a stop at the Ka'u Farmers' Market is a must. The small community market is run by the non-profit organization Ka'u Mainstreet, and has been going strong for 8 years. "It all began on the first Saturday in December, 2001, when the Main Street Board met with four local farmers and arranged to set up stalls in Wai'ohinu park," said Ka'u Mainstreet president Marge Elwell.

As one market vendor commented; "the Volcano Market is a wonderful community party every Sunday morning!"  I was greeted by a stunning variety of breakfast choices, from Thai chicken soup to fluffy whole grain pancakes, homemade bagels and freshly made cheese, fresh baked goods, carrot/beet/ginger juice made to order, and more!"

Waimea Homestead Farmers Market

Waimea Homestead Farmers Market
Waimea Homestead Farmers Market

For years, any time we passed by the Waimea Homestead Farmers Market site it was usually during a week day and the market was closed. A couple of months ago when we were on our way to the Kohala area on a Saturday, we decided to make a stop and check out the market. Two weeks later, a friend invited us to meet her at the market for breakfast. There is a breakfast tent she recommended and that is where we had a long breakfast while being introduced to some of her friends. The breakfast tent feels like the social hub of the market. Here you will find a bit of everything that is made fresh, including a delicious plate of Eggs Benedict. We have been back three times in the past two months!

They come from Waimea, the Hamakua Coast, Waikoloa, Kohala and some as far away as Puna, offering produce, food products, arts & crafts, and almost anything that has been grown or made locally on Hawai’i Island or within the State of Hawai’i.
