Revitalizing Breadfruit

"The Ho'oulu ka 'Ulu Project.“

Ho'oulu ka 'Ulu is a project to revitalize 'ulu (breadfruit) as an attractive, delicious, nutritious, abundant, affordable, and culturally appropriate food which addresses Hawai'i's food security issues. It is well known that Hawai'i imports about 90% of its food, making it one of the most food insecure states in the nation. Additionally, since the economic downturn of 2008, many families lack access to affordable and nutritious food. We believe that breadfruit is a key to solving Hawaii's food security problems.

New Tropical Fruit Publications

The University of Hawaii CTAHR has released six new extension publications on tropical fruit written by Ken Love and Dr. Robert Paull. The publications cover Rollina, Abiu, Jackfruit, Jaboticaba, Soursop and Bilimbi. Each includes a recipe and nutritional information as well as a cost of production analysis from Dr. Kent Fleming.  They are designed to help growers utilize small niche market crops enabling greater sustainability through diversity. Hard copies of the publications will be available at the Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers Conference held Sept. 9 to 11 in Kona and at extension offices around the state.
